Thanks for the recommendations as always. :) I’m going through a phase of podcast listening at the minute so I will give that one a go.
The whole oasis thing this week has been mad. I read an interesting article (recommended by a podcast I was listening to 😅) that’s a rare voice AGAINST oasis. “The most damaging pop cultural force in recent history”!
Thanks for that Gareth - I'm actually not even a massive fan but here with popcorn watching all the madness and memes 😂. I read that they'll be making more from these concerts than they made in the whole of the 90s - it's all starting to feel a bit money-grabby.
Oh god, Emily in Paris gets only worse every season and yet I am always there for it 😂 To be honest this season the French characters speak more French among themselves and I adore Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu (she’s such a class act!) but everything else is like watching a car go downhill without brakes. Is that review from the Guardian the one that says this is a prize show for people who can’t act? Harsh but not completely untrue.
Yes love her too! First got to know her from watching Call My Agent during lockdown (have you watched?). The Guardian review is linked if you want to have a read - I don't remember that particular phrase 😂 but it has some brilliant ones of its own. I don't know how that show manages to reel us in despite all the floof!
It was the pandemic - we needed somewhere to escape, at least visually! The show does a great job of selling Paris (albeit a fictional one). And yes, Call My Agent is a great show - absolutely adore it!
Great piece again, Yara! I have Serpent Queen and Neil Gaiman podcast on my list already. I can't wait for Emily in Paris Part Deux either. I absolutely love the show, it is just so mad, light, romantic and colourful.
Looking forward to the next issue of Lately. And will share with you my feelings on Medici and Gaiman once I have had a chance to check them out.
Yes tell me what you think Sai. The Gaiman podcast I warn you is pretty graphic in detail but I really like how deeply it made me think about the topic of consent. And I know you will love The Serpent Queen (2 seasons to binge which is always a plus).
I listened to the podcast - it was very graphic indeed, but it confused the hell out of me around consent, vulnerability, power play etc. But I am convinced beyond doubt that Gaiman was and is wrong! Do I love his work, yes absolutely, is the product so good because of the kind of human he is? I don't know and that scares me!
So much to unpack right Sai? I agree he took advantage of the power dynamic and was very manipulative. I just wish those fawning messages from the girls did not exist! But it has definitely broadened my thinking in how these situations come to be.
It was a good week of content! And watching The Serpent Queen has made me want to go watch everything Samantha Morton has been in - the only thing I remember is she was Agatha in The Minority Report with Tom Cruise (one of the precogs if you have watched that movie?).
Indeed it must have been. And your followers got the benefit. I have not seen Minority Report. I just finished The Regime with Kate Winslet. Mind-blowing and worth checking out.

Absolutely!!
I need someone to explain Oasis to me. But also, I adore Emily in Paris so maybe there is no hope for my taste in pop culture.
So many eye-opening insights and nuggets in here. Thank you 🙏. Will definitely check out The Serpent Queen.

Love Kate - will have to add to list.
