It’s been a long time for me, I’ve been watching several snippets of each version for this but will watch the whole thing again with new eyes now. There’s also the sequel Son of Kong, which I’ve never seen but - I was amazed by this - it came out also in 1933, a rush job after the success of the first one. Imagine that rate of turnaround for a film!
The level of excitement there must have been! Funnily enough I watched Inglorious Basterds for the first time this week and there's a scene where King Kong makes an appearance as the characters are playing a guessing game. It's come back to mind reading your piece today as it must have been quite the sensation back in the day.
Oh fab I’ll be looking out for it. My main disappointment in this was not finding a place to include a ‘Sounds like Kong’ gif from Chunk in the Goonies (if you remember that bit! 😄)
Thanks so much Jon, really appreciated - it took a while to dig and then piece together the correct info. But our affection for Ruth kept growing the more we learned!
Absolute adventurer - and a bit of a style queen wearing that hat on the ship. I bet she could dive with the sharks by day and dress well for dinner by night 😄
This was fascinating! It’s a surprise that this story hasn’t been turned into a film itself, in a “Saving Mr Banks” style.
I was also thinking this would make such a great film!
We all want this!
Thanks Gareth, and totally agree - Saving Mr Banks is a great ref for it! Casting it in our heads… 😄
Incredibly interesting and a wonderful revelation for me! Thanks so much for sharing this!
Thanks for taking the time to comment - we loved this story and so happy for more people to hear a bit about Ruth.
I did not know this, it was fascinating. P.S. I want more of your recorded audio like last newsletter!
Ok good to know thanks, we’re weren’t sure anyone would listen!
What a fascinating back story!
Thanks Wendy, this was such a fun one to dig into - she had us at the monkey pic 😄
Now I feel I must watch King Kong properly as I’ve only caught bits of it whenever it came on tv and I can’t remember much except the final scene.

You should have just thrown it somewhere all the same 😅
This is such a good read, and so interesting as her story unfolds. You have written this so well. Brilliant read.

Wow what a lady! This is such an interesting story, and now I have a cool fact to whip up at dinner parties.

100% she totally gives off that vibe! I wish I lived such a cool life but also I like being home too much
Haha with you! I’d settle for a 90/10 adventure/home ratio
