You’ve reminded me that I stayed at the Hotel Metropol in Moscow which is the one A Gentleman in Moscow is based on. Amor Towles did write some of the book in one of its rooms. It was famous for so many things - but the fact that its American jazz bar remained open well into the Bolshevik era is what stayed with me.
Now that’s a bar I want to visit! Also I think authors should really think ahead and make sure they pick interesting hotels to write at least a chapter of their future masterpieces - we want more literary breaks! 😄
Oh that’s a brilliant shout! I’d love to visit there one day. Years ago I posted about AGiM being a favourite book on IG and the Hotel Metropol liked it—I was starstruck! 🤩
Literary pilgrimages! Love this. I desperately want to travel to Prince Edward Island and do an “Anne of Green Gables” trip. I looked into it for this Summer but travel is $$. Then I thought perhaps when I’m through writing my series in time for next Summer, I’ll go and it’ll be a treat.
I love this list (I think I’m going to love your whole Substack!). Dream me is definitely taking my daughter on a Von Trapp vacay 🤍🩷 (I don’t think she’ll let me pack clothes crafted from curtains, mind you)
Such a fun idea for a post!! The Salzburg one looks absolutely gorgeous with the big lake in the background. I visited the city when I was a kid and I feel like I didn't appreciate it enough. Now I want to go back on holidays.
Oh to have money and time to visit each of these places!!! I was lucky to stay once at Hôtel de la Poste in St. Louis de Sénégal, which was the hotel used by the pilots of the Aéropostal back in the day, the company that delivered post by plane. Among their ranks was Jean Mermoz (a museum in his name on the history of early aviation is just opposite) and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. After that trip, I read both a collection of Mermoz writings as well as Night Flight and Terre des Hommes (not sure of the English translation) by Saint-Ex and it was magical to be able to grasp their full meaning as I had been to a place (both the hotel and country) so linked to their exploits as pilots.
3 years ago we stayed at the marine house on the Archerfield Estate in North Berwick, Scotland. The study in the house looks out onto an island in the sea - it was where R L Stevenson was inspired to write treasure island! I wish I could add the photo to the post!

Nothing like a good reward earned! I just googled Prince Edward Island and wow it’s beautiful
Take me to the Belles Rives! So many good ones...but anything Fitzgerald gets me.
The glamour! I’d need a whole new wardrobe for it. The views do look incredible, such an idyllic spot

A fully themed Von Trapp holiday - it’s a must! I wonder if they’ve had many visitors who’ve considered hacking at the hotel curtains 😂

A revisit is a great idea - I’ve never been but would love to go!
Such a fun post!! I’ve added a little village in the English countryside to my list 🤞🏽
❤️ Which one?
Spinkhill. My brother lives there.
This was fun, I very much enjoyed it
Thank you! Definitely a fun one to put together and daydream about

This sounds incredible, even better you could follow up with the reading and feel the connection. I’ll go look it up!
It's a bit rundown but it's part of its charm
