She really is. I had assumed somehow that she'd grown up privileged but was wrong - didn't realise really how big a life change fame was for her and to remain this grounded is a serious feat!
Yes! Her work is always brilliant too. She seems to make great choices and that grounded nature seems to come across in her acting. I think I’m talking myself into a Winslet movie marathon…
This edition is fire! I was unsure about The Perfect Couple but it seems it'll be totally up my street.
And I now get why you are keen to watch Lee. You won't be disappointed ; ) Without spoiling anything, I loved how Kate unashamedly embraces her body and she's absolutely stunning! Must listen now to that podcast interview. And what to say about Stanley Tucci? He must have been right to make Meryl Streep laugh so hard. And those final words from Gabor Mate are very sensible. I have a couple of his books and agree that he offers sound advice every time.
Meryl's laugh is so infectious. Love the banter between those two. And yes do listen to that podcast episode - not that fan girl levels could get higher but they will. Awaiting Lee in our part of the world!
I've come back here to say I've now watched The Perfect Couple and at times it was so bad it was good. I don't know how to explain in a way that does justice to what I mean because the bottom line is that I quite enjoyed. Let's say that it took me back to my childhood watching telenovelas with my grandmother and the implausible turns the story would take to keep people watching the drama of these rich people. Everything was there except the language. I set up the Latin Spanish version just to test my theory and yep, it worked. This was a proper telenovela, except that if it's in English and it's got Nicole Kidman in it you don't call it that. You just say "limited series" 😆
This is such a good comparison! And I love how you put the Spanish version on. I can relate as Arabic and Turkish series are just as melodramatic and we all just suspend disbelief and relish in it.
If you’re in Julia Child world, I would heartily recommend the HBO Max show ‘Julia’, with Sarah Lancashire giving a wonderful performance. It gives her husband Paul plenty of screen time and he is beautifully brought to life by David Hyde Pierce (best known as Niles, in ‘Frasier’). It’s complementary to ‘Julie and Julia’ and is a blast of joy and warmth. (Here in the UK it was on Sky.)
halfway through the perfect couple and loving all the over the top performances. That is so interesting about Mr. Julia Child, I love how he contributed behind the scenes with his skills.
I keep going back and forth on The Perfect Couple depending on the review I read. I might give it a try if the ending is satisfying it sounds like it's worth sticking with it.
I was the same - but I think it is one of those that you have to watch just to get in on the chat about it! Come on Aurelie join the ranks of all of us who got sucked in.
How wise Gabor Mate is! I too can’t quite decide if The Perfect Couple ventured too close to the bad bad line, but I devoured it. A bit of much needed mindless fluff. First I’m hearing of Kate’s new project…thanks for getting it on my radar. Always the best suggestions, Yara! xx
So i'm curious about the life of Lee Miller -a model that completely re-invented herself becoming a photographer and war correspondent for Vogue during WW2. You might have heard of her Sally but I had only vaguely known her as artist Man Ray's muse (something that Kate mentions is the part of her story that is overly focused on).
I too know of her but not the details. What a fabulous story to tell. I’m glad HER story is getting told, not the one of her relative to someone else. xx
Absolutely in love with this week's too. I adore and respect Kate Winslet so much, an advocate of embracing ageing like I do, she is my star! Will listen to the podcast soon... thanks!
You'll love it Sai, we love How to Fail in general because Elizabeth Day is such a thoughtful interviewer - so the combination of the two of them makes for rich conversation.
Love this edition of Lately! I’d completely missed that the film Lee is coming out. I’m dying to see it now. Sigh! I overspend on movies as much as I do on books!
Kate Winslet is just an icon isn’t she!? Can’t wait to watch Lee

Right? It’s got all the drama we crave wrapped around a veneer of American glamour 😂
Pass me my cashmere cardigan

I've been meaning to watch this but it keeps falling down my list! Thanks for the reminder Chris - I'm here for anything that brings joy and warmth!

Talk about transferrable skills! War room to kitchen is not one I would have expected!

Haha you make a compelling case I have to say!

We could have worse vices Ingrid...that's what I keep telling myself!
